Cowles Mountain is the most hiked trail in San Diego County. On any given Saturday morning, the main trailhead at Golfcrest Drive in San Carlos looks like a parking lot at a Padres game. But the eastern approach, the one that starts in Santee, is a different story.
The Mesa Road trailhead at 8282 Mesa Road sits right on the Santee border, inside Mission Trails Regional Park. Street parking is free. No parks pass required. And you won't fight 200 people for a spot at 7am.
The Trail: What to Expect
The Big Rock Trail starts from the trailhead and heads uphill toward the Cowles Service Road. You follow that to the summit of Cowles Mountain at 1,593 feet, the highest point within San Diego city limits. The total distance runs about three miles round-trip, with roughly 950 feet of elevation gain. Most hikers finish in 90 minutes to two hours.
The beginning can be a little confusing, with a few trails branching out near the trailhead. Head straight past the hiking information board. You'll be on the Big Rock Trail for roughly half the hike. The trails are well marked. Wildflowers pop up along the edges during spring, and you can see Cowles Mountain ahead of you for most of the climb.
There's almost no shade above the midway point. Bring water. On summer mornings, start before 8am or you'll be hiking in full sun. An evening hike works too, especially on clear nights when you can see city lights from the summit.
Why the Santee Approach Is Worth It
The western approach from Golfcrest Drive is popular because it's the shortest and most direct. But the eastern approach from Mesa Road in Santee is quieter, offers slightly different views, and connects to Big Rock Park, which makes for a better starting point if you're bringing kids or dogs.
Big Rock Park itself has 808 Google reviews and a 4.6 rating. It's a neighborhood park with a playground, picnic areas, and open space. A lot of Santee families use it as a basecamp for Cowles Mountain hikes, grabbing breakfast on the way back at spots like Broken Yolk Cafe or Omelette Factory Santee on Magnolia Avenue.
Other Trails Nearby in Mission Trails
Mission Trails Regional Park is nearly 7,000 acres, making it the largest municipally owned park in California and the seventh largest in the country. From the Santee side, you can also access the Father Junipero Serra Trail, which follows Mission Gorge Road near Old Mission Dam. Kwaay Paay Peak is another option: a steep 2.5-mile out-and-back with 885 feet of elevation gain to a 1,194-foot summit.
The East Fortuna Staging Area off Equestrian Circle in eastern Santee gives access to the South Fortuna and North Fortuna trails, which are quieter and longer alternatives. The Santee Boulders area, sometimes called Mickey Mouse Mountain, draws rock climbers and scramblers.
Fueling Up Before and After
The Mission Gorge Road corridor has plenty of food options within a five-minute drive of the trailhead. Kaffee Meister on Carlton Hills Boulevard is a solid coffee stop. Mary's Donuts & Coffee on Carlton Hills is the old-school pre-hike carb load. Phil's BBQ on Mission Gorge Road makes for a solid post-hike reward. And Jimmy's of Santee has been feeding hikers breakfast for years.
