Coronado School of the Arts doesn't look like much from the outside. It's inside Coronado High School, on a small island with a student body of about 1,200. There's no separate campus. No performing arts center with a donor's name on the building. But CoSA has quietly become one of the most respected performing arts conservatory programs in California, and students from across San Diego County apply to attend.
That's the part people miss. You don't have to live in Coronado to go to CoSA.
How It Works
CoSA is a conservatory-style program embedded within a comprehensive public high school. Students take their academic courses alongside CHS students and then spend a dedicated block each day in their conservatory area: visual arts, music, dance, theater, digital arts, or creative writing. The conservatory model means students get depth, not breadth. You pick one area and you go deep in it for four years.
Students from outside the Coronado Unified School District can apply through an inter-district transfer. That's how CoSA draws from the whole county. A kid in Chula Vista or El Cajon or Encinitas can audition, get accepted, and attend CHS as a CoSA student. They're taking the same English and math classes as everyone else, but their arts training is conservatory-level.
The Performing Arts Ecosystem on the Island
CoSA doesn't exist in isolation. Coronado has a performing arts community that's surprisingly deep for a town this size. Lamb's Players Theatre is a professional theater company on Orange Avenue that has been producing shows for decades. Village Theatre recently reopened as UltraStar Cinema in July 2026, bringing first-run movies back to the island. Coronado Playhouse hosts community theater productions.
Coronado Academy of Dance trains younger dancers who often feed into CoSA's dance conservatory. The connection between the Academy and CoSA is informal but real. Kids who start at the Academy at age 8 sometimes end up performing in CoSA's senior showcase at 17.
