Parking on Coronado Island in July is miserable. Everyone knows it. The lots near Coronado Beach fill up before 10am on weekends, the side streets near Orange Avenue are packed by noon, and the meters along the commercial district eat quarters. The city knows it too. That's why they've been running the Free Summer Shuttle since 2013, and in 2026 it's back with bigger coverage and a special Fourth of July connector for Coronado Cays residents.
Here's how it works and why you should use it.
The Basics
Three brightly wrapped MTS buses run along Route 904, looping through the Village area of Coronado every 20 minutes from 9am to 8pm. Seven days a week. June 7 through September 7. Completely free. No ticket, no pass, no app. You just get on.
The route connects the Coronado Shores, City Hall, Orange Avenue, the Ferry Landing, and the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa. It's operated by the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and funded by the City of Coronado. The colorful bus wraps are sponsored by Discover Coronado.
The buses have bike racks for two bikes each. If the rack's full, you wait for the next bus. You can't bring bikes aboard. Twenty minutes isn't a long wait.
What the Route Covers
Think of it as a loop that hits every major stop on the island's commercial corridor. Starting from the Shores area on the south end, the shuttle runs up through City Hall, turns onto Orange Avenue through the Village, continues to the Ferry Landing where Bluewater Boathouse, Il Fornaio, and Peohe's are clustered, then loops back around via the Marriott.
The practical effect: you can park anywhere you find a legal spot, ride the shuttle to wherever you actually want to be, and ride it back when you're done. Or skip the car entirely. Take the ferry from downtown San Diego to the Ferry Landing and hop on the shuttle from First Street. You can be sitting at Clayton's Coffee Shop on Orange Avenue within 20 minutes of stepping off the boat.
The Cays Connector on July 4th
The Coronado Cays are on the south end of the island, about a 10-minute drive from the Village. On a normal day, residents drive to Orange Avenue for restaurants and shopping. On July 4th, driving anywhere near the parade route is a nightmare. So the city added a dedicated Cays shuttle for Independence Day.
The July 4th Cays shuttle runs from 7:30am to 11pm in approximately 30-minute intervals, traveling between the northeast corner of Coronado Cays and Grand Caribe, with a stop at Liberty Military Housing, to the southeastern corner of Avenida de las Arenas and Silver Strand Boulevard. From there, riders connect to the main Village shuttle. PRONTO passes are also available at the Coronado Cays Homeowners Association for Cays residents.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Coronado is small. It's less than 3 miles from the Ferry Landing to Hotel del Coronado. You can walk Orange Avenue end to end in 25 minutes. But parking makes everything harder in the summer, especially for visitors who've never been and don't know which streets are residential, which have meters, and which will get them towed.
The shuttle eliminates the question. Park at the Shores lot or the Tidelands lot. Or take the ferry. Or drive to the Coronado Golf Course lot and catch the bus. Once you're on, the loop is fast enough that you can hit three or four stops in an afternoon without ever thinking about your car.
Is it hard to find parking on Coronado Island? In July and August, yes. Especially near the beach and the Village. Is there free parking? Some. Residential side streets don't have meters, but read the signs carefully. No parking zones and tow-away zones are enforced. The Tidelands Park lot is free but fills up. The Ferry Landing has limited parking. And the parade route on Orange Avenue has a 5am setup cutoff with towing starting at 4am on July 4th.
The honest answer: use the shuttle. It exists specifically because parking is bad, and it's good enough that locals use it too. The Coronado Chamber of Commerce promotes it, the city funds it, and MTS runs it on reliable 20-minute loops. It's one of the best free public services in San Diego County, and most people outside Coronado don't even know about it.
