For decades, Santee didn't have a community center. The city relied on park facilities, the YMCA, and rented spaces for community events and meetings. On January 30, 2026, that changed. The City of Santee broke ground on the Santee Community Center at 10129 Riverwalk Drive.
Construction is now underway on a two-story, 12,500-square-foot facility that will sit east of the Cameron Family YMCA and Sportsplex USA, north of Woodglen Vista Channel and Town Center Park East.
What's Inside
The community center will include two event spaces, multipurpose rooms, two covered patios, a service kitchen, food service truck parking, and a four-tier amphitheater for outdoor performances. The double-height lobby is designed to be a gathering point, not just a hallway.
The building will also serve as the City of Santee's backup Emergency Operations Center, which means the facility is built to function during disasters when other city infrastructure might be compromised.
Design and Sustainability
The project was designed by HMC Architects. The design team oriented the building to face the San Diego River tributary that runs along the north edge of the site. A footbridge connects the community center to the park and trail system to the south.
According to HMC Architects, the design uses a "passive first approach" that works with the sun to reduce heat gain. The building is oriented along the east/west axis, with more of the perimeter along the south edge to take advantage of views and natural light. The project is designed to achieve net-positive energy and is the flagship project of Santee's recently adopted Sustainability Plan.
Site Improvements
The project covers 3.57 acres of a 5.2-acre parcel. Site improvements include six biofiltration basins, an upgraded trash enclosure, a new joint-use parking lot, and about 29,360 square feet of landscaping and irrigation.
What It Means for the Town Center Area
The community center anchors the Town Center district that the city has been building out for years. The area already includes the YMCA, Sportsplex USA, Town Center Park East, Chuze Fitness, Board & Brew, and the Santee Street Fair grounds. Adding a dedicated community center fills the last obvious gap.
The Santee Town Center Specific Plan Update, which is also in progress, proposes expanding the overall Town Center area by about 42 acres and creating five distinct neighborhoods within the district. The community center will be a centerpiece of that expanded vision.
