Twenty-five years ago, the old Naval Training Center barracks on Historic Decatur Road in Point Loma started turning into something nobody expected: one of San Diego's most important arts campuses. The Arts District at Liberty Station now hosts working artist studios, performing arts venues, museums, galleries, and a calendar of events that runs year-round. In 2026, the district is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a campaign called "Creating, Connecting, Celebrating โ 25 Years and Growing," and it's wrapping up with a community gala on April 30th.
First Friday Open Studios โ Every Month, Free
On the first Friday of every month, the Arts District opens its doors. You can walk through working studios, meet the artists, watch them paint or sculpt or weld, buy original work, and do it all without spending a dime on admission. It's the kind of low-key evening that works whether you're on a date, dragging the kids along, or just killing time before dinner at Solare Ristorante or Stone Brewing around the corner.
The studios range from watercolor and textile art to photography and mixed media. San Diego Watercolor Society has been a fixture here for years. Visions Museum of Textile Art does rotating exhibitions. Nautical History Gallery & Museum connects art to Point Loma's maritime roots. And individual studios like those run by Artist Leslie Pierce offer classes alongside their open studio nights.
ArtWalk Liberty Station โ July 31 to August 2
The big annual event is ArtWalk, and 2026 marks its 21st year at Liberty Station. Over 175 artists from across the US and Mexico set up around Ingram Plaza, showing paintings, photography, glass, ceramics, jewelry, and sculpture. Saturday and Sunday are free to the public (10am to 6pm Saturday, 10am to 5pm Sunday). Friday night is a ticketed preview party from 5pm to 8pm with live music, food, and first dibs on the artwork. The San Diego Music Awards partners with ArtWalk for the live music lineup.
The Joan โ Point Loma's Newest Performing Arts Venue
The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center, known simply as The Joan, opened in September 2025. It gives Liberty Station a dedicated performance space for theater, dance, and music. Cygnet Theatre, one of San Diego's most respected small theater companies with nearly 500 Google reviews, produces its full season here. San Diego Dance Theater and Light Box Theater round out the performing arts lineup.
And speaking of theater: THE LOT Liberty Station combines a luxury cinema with restaurant-quality food and cocktails. It's a different kind of performance venue, but with over 2,700 Google reviews, it clearly works.
Beyond the Art
Liberty Station is more than galleries and stages. BRICK hosts everything from the Cheese & Libation Expo to private events. Moniker Events and Moniker General form a creative compound that blends retail, coffee, and event space. Liberty Station Outdoor Venues host markets, festivals, and holiday events throughout the year. Liberty Station is also commemorating America's 250th anniversary in 2026 with special programming.
