Best Breweries and Taprooms in Ocean Beach, San Diego โ€” A Locals Guide to OB Craft Beer

Eight breweries and tasting rooms within walking distance, one rooftop with pier views, and a sour-beer specialist that just won Best of OB 2026.

Best Breweries and Taprooms in Ocean Beach, San Diego โ€” A Locals Guide to OB Craft Beer

San Diego is the craft beer capital of America. That's not opinion. That's math: 150-plus breweries across the county, more per capita than any major metro. And Ocean Beach packs an outsized share of them into a handful of blocks along Newport Avenue and Voltaire Street. You can walk from one end of OB's beer scene to the other in about twelve minutes. You just won't want to rush it.

California Wild Ales

California Wild Ales is the one that keeps winning things. The sour-beer and wild-ale specialists just swept multiple categories at the Best of Ocean Beach 2026 awards. Their taproom on Newport Avenue was built with reclaimed and donated materials, and the whole operation feels like it grew out of the neighborhood rather than being dropped into it. The barrel-aging program runs out of a separate Midway/Point Loma facility, but the OB taproom is where you drink the results. If you've never had a properly fermented wild ale, start here. 4.9 stars across 772 reviews.

Ocean Beach Brewery

Ocean Beach Brewery was the first microbrewery to claim a spot on Newport Avenue, and its rooftop was intentionally designed to be the highest point in all of OB. Three levels, the top one open-air with views of the OB Pier and the surf break below. Their Dunkel took silver at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival. Go for sunset. Bring a jacket.

Pizza Port Ocean Beach

Pizza Port Ocean Beach brews on-site and serves alongside their wood-fired pizzas. The taproom has the look and feel of a surf shop, which is appropriate because half the people in there just came from the water. Shark Bite Red was their first-ever beer. Jetty IPA is named after a local surf break. Nearly 4,000 Google reviews, 4.6 stars. It's an institution.

Kilowatt Brewing

Kilowatt Brewing Ocean Beach runs a full taproom on Newport with a 4.7 rating. They also operate a smaller OB Tasting Room nearby. Two locations, same neighborhood. The beer rotates frequently and leans experimental.

Mike Hess Brewing

Mike Hess Brewing Ocean Beach sits on Voltaire Street, anchoring the north end of the beer corridor near Dog Beach. It's a solid stop before or after a walk to Dog Beach, and the patio is built for long afternoons.

The Rest of the Tap List

Beyond the breweries, OB's bars and pubs pour deep tap lists of their own. OB Noodle House Bar 1502 runs a bar program with over 2,000 reviews. The Harp is a classic OB dive. Sunshine Company Saloon has been pouring since before craft beer was a phrase. Northside Tavern does the neighborhood-bar thing as well as anyone. And Vinum Locus is the wine spot if your group has a non-beer drinker who still wants to tag along.

For live music after the tasting flights, Winstons Beach Club and The Holding Company are the two OB venues that book touring acts and local bands. Between the Ocean Beach restaurants, the tasting rooms, and the music, you can build an entire evening without ever needing an Uber.
