Coronado's dining scene is in the middle of its most significant transformation in decades. After years of relative stability along Orange Avenue and the Ferry Landing, a surge of new restaurant concepts is reshaping how locals and visitors eat and drink on the island. From waterfront fine dining to boutique hotel brasseries, here's what's new and what's coming to Coronado's dining landscape.
Maiden Coronado โ A 17-Year Wait Ends at the Ferry Landing
Construction is officially underway on Maiden Coronado, a sprawling indoor-outdoor restaurant on the waterfront at the Coronado Ferry Landing. Developed by San Diego hospitality group Social Syndicate, the 12,000-square-foot venue will sit on a parcel next to Il Fornaio that has been vacant since the 1990s. The restaurant will feature Southern California and Hawaiian-inspired seafood, 22-foot ceilings, engineered teak facades, and unobstructed views of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and downtown skyline. Social Syndicate CEO Brendan Huffman has described the project as a catalyst for reinvigorating the northern end of the island. A late 2026 or early 2027 opening is expected.
Night Hawk and Fallen Empire at The Baby Grand
CH Projects, the hospitality group behind Born & Raised and the Lafayette Hotel, is preparing to open The Baby Grand โ a 31-room boutique hotel at 1315 Orange Avenue across from the Hotel del Coronado. Opening with the hotel will be Night Hawk, a 6,000-square-foot Greek and Mediterranean-inspired brasserie featuring open-fire cooking and lush, jungle-like landscaping. Adjacent to Night Hawk will be Fallen Empire, a reservations-only champagne and oyster bar with mirrored walls and crushed velvet banquettes. A third concept โ an omakase restaurant โ is expected to follow later in the year. These additions join an already expanding stretch of bars and nightlife in Coronado.
Dive Rooftop at The Bower โ Coronado's First Rooftop Bar
The Bower, a 39-room boutique hotel at 1417 Orange Avenue, opened in early 2025 and brought something Coronado had never had: a rooftop bar. Dive, the hotel's signature restaurant perched three stories up, offers panoramic views from Point Loma to Baja California and serves California coastal cuisine with locally sourced ingredients. The beverage program draws on the property's history as the former Villa Capri, blending Japanese wabi-sabi influence with Hollywood-era glamour. Dive is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
La Corriente โ Tijuana Seafood Comes to Orange Avenue
Founded in Tijuana in 2010, La Corriente opened its second California location in the Coronado Historical Association's cafe space at the corner of Orange and Isabella avenues in late summer 2025. The restaurant specializes in Pacific Mexican seafood traditions and joins Coronado's growing roster of Mexican restaurants. The space, which has seen several previous tenants come and go, is managed in part by Diego Girault, the longtime operations director of Chez Loma, one of Coronado's most enduring fine dining establishments.
What It Means for Coronado
Taken together, these openings represent a shift in Coronado's dining identity. The island has long been defined by its legacy establishments โ the Hotel del Coronado's restaurants, Peohe's at the Ferry Landing, and Orange Avenue staples like Chez Loma and Stake Chophouse. Now, a new generation of concepts is arriving with bigger footprints, bolder design, and culinary ambitions that match some of San Diego's most celebrated neighborhoods.
