A $43.5 million Naval Building 178 rehabilitation, The Joan opened in Point Loma in September 2025 as Cygnet Theatre's new Liberty Station home, officially named The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center. The venue deliberately runs no on-site food program, pushing patrons into the Arts District dining corridor anchored by Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. Two performance spaces fill the former Naval Training Center exchange building — the 282-seat Joseph Clayes III Theater for mainstage productions and the 150-seat Dottie Studio Theater for intimate staging. Eight inches of concrete and HVAC shock absorbers block San Diego International Airport flyover noise on a site three miles from the runway, and the venue's 50,000 projected annual patrons generate sustained foot traffic to nearby Liberty Station destinations including Moniker General. Mainstage musicals with live orchestra pit accompaniment, including the Sondheim Follies production that inaugurated the venue, represent the most technically demanding bookings the space handles.
