About

Tucked behind an unassuming door at 910 Grand Ave, Ste 105-107, in the 92109, Captain's Quarters is a cocktail bar that transports guests into the private cabin of a 17th-century sea captain. Owner Matt Spencer, who runs the San Diego Cocktail Management (SDCM) portfolio, conceived the concept after years of eyeing the intimate space next to his tiki bar The Grass Skirt, which he opened on Grand Ave in 2016. When the neighboring suite became available in 2022, Spencer seized the opportunity and built out a moody, detail-rich environment filled with dark wood, nautical artifacts, and dim candlelight. SDCM Beverage Director Eric Johnson oversees a cocktail program anchored by gin—fitting for a ship captain's remedy—alongside creations featuring rum, mezcal, bourbon, tequila, and vodka. Executive Chef Brian Redzikowski handles a menu of elevated small plates, including Smoked Salmon Poppers and Manchego-Prosciutto sandwiches, with heartier options like Mussels Escabeche and Beef Rioja rounding out the galley. The San Diego Architectural Foundation has recognized the space for its immersive design. Captain's Quarters accepts reservations for parties of up to six through its website, and larger groups of seven to twelve can submit an inquiry to nicole@sdcm.com. The bar earned a 4.3-star Google rating across more than 180 reviews, with visitors praising the cocktail precision and atmospheric detail. Hours run Tuesday through Sunday starting at 5 p.m., extending to 2 a.m. on Thursday through Saturday. Guests looking for another refined evening option nearby can explore Oceana Coastal Kitchen for coastal-inspired plates and cocktails.
