About

Hidden behind a poke counter at 910 Grand Ave in the 92109, The Grass Skirt is a speakeasy-style tiki bar and Asian fusion restaurant that opened in November 2016 and quickly became one of Pacific Beach's most sought-after reservations. Owner Matt Spencer runs the venue through his hospitality group SDCM, which employs roughly 600 people across San Diego restaurants and bars including Kettner Exchange, Waverly, and Camino Riviera. The interior was designed by Davis Krumins of Davis Ink Ltd., known for shaping nightlife spaces like Fluxx and Parq, and the result is an immersive Polynesian environment with bamboo, thatch-covered booths, tropical wallpaper, fire features, and carved tiki posts by local artist Tiki Bosko. One booth sits inside the mouth of a massive tiki head, and entry is part of the experience — guests walk through a freezer door to discover the bar. Tropical cocktail lovers exploring Grand Ave will also enjoy Miss B's Coconut Club, which channels a similar Caribbean-island spirit with rum-driven drinks and island fare. Corporate Executive Chef Brian Redzikowski, a veteran of Joël Robuchon's kitchen, oversees the Southeast Asian-inspired food menu featuring dishes like bigeye tuna with pickled ginger and bonito flakes. Beverage Director Eric Johnson curates the tropical cocktail program, which includes interactive, theatrical drinks served in custom vessels. San Diego Magazine featured the bar at its opening, noting it brought tiki culture back to its original Trader Vic's-era sophistication. In 2022, Spencer expanded next door with Captain's Quarters, a nautical gin speakeasy modeled after a 17th-century ship's cabin, accessible through the same Good Time Poke entrance. The annual Tiki Luau has become one of Pacific Beach's most popular recurring events, and live music and trivia nights keep the calendar busy. Reservations are strongly recommended — walk-ins typically face a wait. Just a short walk west, Pacific Beach AleHouse offers a more laid-back rooftop craft beer experience with ocean views. The bar also hosts private events for groups, and the space transforms for seasonal pop-ups like Sippin' Santa during the holidays.
