Founded April 20, 2000 by Heidi Smith — University of Wisconsin-Stout Art Metals graduate and San Diego resident since 1984 — Blondstone Jewelry Studio is a live-working silver studio at 1912 Cable Street producing the signature SOL Wave design. The SOL Wave, discovered in 2003 and hand-cut from specific sliced seashells, is set into original sterling silver designs using beach-combed sea treasures that draw on the same shell inventory tradition found at nearby Ocean Gifts and Shells. Jewelry production happens behind the counter while customers browse, meaning every necklace, ring, or pendant in the case was made on the premises by Heidi rather than drop-shipped wholesale. Repair services are available on-site, along with online appointments for custom commissions and resize work on existing SOL Wave or shell-set pieces. Heidi closed a 2002-opened La Jolla satellite in November 2015 to consolidate her full-time bench back in OB, a choice that cemented the 1912 Cable address as the single global source for her designs within the same OB maker community that supports independent painters such as Gretchen Weidner Artist.
