About

Karl Strauss Brewing Company in downtown San Diego opened at 1157 Columbia Street on February 2, 1989, becoming the city's first craft brewery since Prohibition and the first-ever brewpub in San Diego. Co-founders Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner built the original brewhouse with hands-on recipe development and operational training from Master Brewer Karl Strauss, Cramer's cousin and a former vice president of production at Pabst Brewing Company — a lineage that positioned Karl Strauss as the catalyst for what became San Diego's craft-beer industry, now home to thousands of independent breweries including fellow downtown operations like Ballast Point Brewing. The 4,900-square-foot flagship runs a seven-barrel pilot system with two 14-barrel fermenters that Brewmaster Paul Segura — recipient of San Diego Beer News's 2024 Vanguard Brewer Lifetime Achievement Award — uses as a research-and-development sandbox for experimental releases. Core beers include Red Trolley Ale, Follow the Sun Lager, Tower X West Coast IPA, and the seasonal Golden Stout brewed with Bird Rock Coffee beans, which earned a Silver Medal at the 2024 World Beer Cup. A recent remodel exposed the brewing tanks behind glass entryway doors to create a 30-person private events space immersed in the production environment, while Karl Strauss Distributing now extends the company's infrastructure to fellow independent producers — the same community-building model that Stone Brewing Tap Room on Kettner practices through its own guest-tap program. The company acquired the Columbia Street property outright in October 2023 after decades of leasing, securing the site where San Diego's craft-beer movement began.
