About

Coronado MainStreet has managed the revitalization and promotion of the Orange Avenue commercial district since the City of Coronado established the 501(c)(3) organization in 1988, when downtown storefronts sat at a 35-percent vacancy rate, on Coronado Island in the 92118 ZIP. The nonprofit's annual MotorCars on MainStreet car show transforms Spreckels Park and the surrounding Orange Avenue blocks into a showcase of classic and exotic automobiles, and the December Holiday Open House brings island merchants, live music, and seasonal programming to the corridor between Hotel Del Coronado and the Coronado Ferry Landing. MainStreet's four-committee structure — Design, Economic Vitality, Promotion, and Organization — follows the National Main Street Center's accredited framework, and the organization's work has contributed to bringing the Orange Avenue vacancy rate from 35 percent in 1988 to near-full occupancy. Design-committee projects address streetscape aesthetics, wayfinding signage, storefront improvement guidelines, and the preservation of the architectural character that distinguishes Coronado's village from generic commercial corridors, including coordination with the Coronado Historical Association on historic-building standards. Economic vitality efforts recruit and retain businesses that serve both 92118 residents and the visitors who cross the Coronado Bridge or ride the Coronado Ferry to explore the island's walkable retail and dining scene. Island merchants participating in MainStreet events stock their inventory through the island's retail ecosystem, which includes Coronado Mercantile and the boutiques, galleries, and gift shops that line Orange Avenue from Coronado Beach to the bayfront. The organization's promotion of Coronado shopping draws foot traffic to the same corridor anchored by Hotel Del Coronado, sustaining the sales-tax revenue that funds city services across the island.
