Wednesday at 4pm, the 4900 block of Newport Avenue closes to traffic. By 4:30, the Ocean Beach Farmers Market is running. Produce vendors line one side. Hot food on the other. Live musicians play at intervals along the block. And the whole thing smells like grilled sausages and fresh strawberries, which is a combination that shouldn't work but does.
The market runs every Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm on Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon Streets in Ocean Beach, San Diego. It operates year-round, rain or shine, and it's been a certified farmers market through the California Department of Agriculture for as long as most OB residents can remember.
What You'll Find
The produce section is the anchor. Local farms bring seasonal fruits, vegetables, honey, kombucha, flowers, and baked goods. The certification means the farmers selling here are actually growing what they're selling, which matters if you're particular about where your food comes from.
The hot food vendors rotate, but you can usually count on tacos, bratwurst in hoagie rolls with sauerkraut and mustard, African food, and a few other regulars. Prices are reasonable. A full dinner's worth of street food runs $10-15 depending on how hungry you are.
Then there's the craft section: jewelry, handmade clothing, incense, candles, and whatever else OB's creative population decides to bring that week. And the drum circle. The drum circle forms in the grassy area near the OB Pier end of the market, and it runs until well after the official market closes. It's the most OB thing in OB.
What's Around the Market
The market sits in the middle of OB's commercial core, which means you can combine it with dinner, drinks, or shopping without moving your car. Hodad's is right there. California Wild Ales and Kilowatt Brewing are a short walk for post-market pints. Azucar does Cuban coffee and pastries if you want dessert. Peace Pies handles the raw and vegan crowd. And An's Electronics Repair gelato is a block south on Bacon Street if you've got room for a scoop.
For shopping, the Ocean Beach Antique Mall stays open during market hours. The Black is up the block at 4995 Newport. And The Philosopher's Stone Crystal Shop draws its own crowd of browsers.
Parking and Getting There
OB parking is always a challenge, and the market makes it worse. The CVS lot on Newport offers validated parking for up to 90 minutes if you select the Farmers Market option at the pay station. Street parking fills fast, so arrive by 3:30 if you want a spot. Better option: take the MTS 35 bus, bike down the OB bike path, or Lyft in and walk home full. The market is at the 4900 block of Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon Streets. It runs every Wednesday, 4-8pm, year-round.
