Carlsbad's coastline runs nearly four miles from Tamarack Beach in the north to South Ponto near the Encinitas border, and every stretch has a different personality.

Carlsbad Beaches โ€” From Tamarack to South Ponto, a Local's Guide to Every Beach, Tide Pool, and Campground

Carlsbad has almost four miles of coastline, and none of it looks the same. The sand near the Village is wide and flat. The bluffs south of town drop straight down to rocky tide pools. The campground stretches sit on top of cliffs with views that people pay resort prices to wake up to. If you're searching for "Carlsbad beaches," you need to know which one you actually want, because the answer depends on whether you're surfing, camping, walking the dog, or just looking for a clean stretch of sand where the kids can dig holes for three hours.

Tamarack Beach and Tamarack Surf Beach

Tamarack Beach sits at the north end of Carlsbad's coastline, right where Tamarack Avenue meets Carlsbad Boulevard. It gets 1,900 monthly Google searches by name. The beach is wide, the parking lot is free (but fills by 10 a.m. on summer weekends), and the break here is a consistent beach break that works for beginners and intermediate surfers. Longboarders love this spot.

The Carlsbad seawall runs along the top of Tamarack Beach, and it's one of the best walking paths in North County. You can walk south from Tamarack all the way down to Carlsbad State Beach without ever leaving the paved path. On a clear morning, you'll see all the way to Point Loma.

Restaurants near Tamarack Beach include several options along Carlsbad Village Drive, which is a three-minute walk east from the sand. Harbor Fish Cafe and Blue Ocean Robata & Sushi Bar are both within walking distance. So is Pizza Port, which is where half the surfers end up after a session.

Carlsbad State Beach

Carlsbad State Beach is the main stretch, and it gets a staggering 22,200 monthly searches when you include "South Carlsbad State Beach" in the count. The beach runs along Carlsbad Boulevard south of the Village, and the access points are marked by staircases that cut down through the low bluffs to the sand below.

This is the beach most visitors picture when they think of Carlsbad. The sand is golden, the water is clean, and the waves are manageable for swimmers. Lifeguards are on duty during summer months. There's metered street parking along Carlsbad Boulevard, and a few small free lots at the staircase access points.

The tide pools at the southern end of Carlsbad State Beach are some of the most accessible in San Diego County. "Carlsbad tide pools" gets 1,900 monthly searches, and for good reason. At low tide, the rocky platforms reveal sea anemones, hermit crabs, small fish, and the occasional starfish. Bring water shoes. The rocks are slippery, and barefoot is a bad idea. Check the tide charts before you go. You want a negative low tide for the best viewing, and those happen early in the morning during spring and summer months.

South Carlsbad State Beach Campground

South Carlsbad State Beach Campground is one of the most popular campgrounds in California. It gets 4,400 monthly searches by name, and reservations for summer weekends fill up months in advance. The campground sits on top of the bluffs overlooking the ocean, and some of the sites have direct views of the water from your tent or RV.

There are 220 campsites total. Some are pull-through for RVs, others are tent-only. All of them include a picnic table and fire ring. Restrooms with coin-operated showers are spread throughout the grounds. Reservations go through ReserveCalifornia.com, and the booking window opens seven months in advance. If you want a Friday-Saturday in July, set a calendar reminder and book the minute the window opens. They go fast.

The campground is also a gateway to the beach below. Staircase access leads down the bluffs to a long, uncrowded stretch of sand that most day visitors don't know about. It's one of the quieter swimming and surfing spots in Carlsbad, and the sunsets from the bluff-top sites are the reason people come back year after year.

Ponto Beach and South Ponto

Ponto Beach and South Ponto Beach sit at the southern end of Carlsbad's coastline, near the border with Encinitas. "Ponto Beach Carlsbad" gets 4,400 monthly searches. The beach is accessible from a parking lot off Ponto Drive, and the sand here is less crowded than the Village beaches on summer afternoons.

South Ponto is a strong surf spot, especially when the south swells hit in late summer. The lagoon outlet near the beach can create interesting sandbars that shape the waves. It's a spot that rewards local knowledge. If you don't know the break, watch from the parking lot for ten minutes before paddling out.

The Batiquitos Lagoon trail system starts near Ponto and runs east along the lagoon. It's a flat, easy hike with bird-watching opportunities that draw biologists and casual walkers alike. The lagoon is a nature reserve, so dogs and bikes are not allowed on the trail, but it's one of the most peaceful walks in Carlsbad.

What to Bring to Carlsbad Beaches

Sunscreen. Always. Carlsbad sits at the same latitude as Casablanca, and the UV index runs high from April through October. Bring a pop-up shade tent if you're staying more than two hours, especially with kids. Water shoes for the tide pools. A wetsuit if you're surfing between November and May; the water drops into the mid-50s in winter. And cash for the metered parking along Carlsbad Boulevard, though most meters now accept cards and apps.

Beach bonfires are allowed at designated fire rings on Carlsbad State Beach. The rings are first-come, first-served, and they fill up on Friday and Saturday evenings during summer. Show up by 4 p.m. if you want one. Bring your own wood. Fires must be out by midnight.

Staying Near the Beach

Carlsbad has strong lodging options within walking distance of the sand. Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort sits directly on Carlsbad Boulevard and gets 4,400 monthly searches by name. Tamarack Beach Resort & Hotel is steps from Tamarack Beach and pulls 2,400 monthly searches. Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort and Spa sits on the bluffs above South Carlsbad State Beach, with Chandler's Oceanfront Dining on the property serving seafood with ocean views.

For a newer option, Hotel Solea opened in March 2026 after a multi-million-dollar transformation of the former Sheraton. It's an Autograph Collection property with a boutique, botanical feel and a new Italian restaurant called Verise on site.

Carlsbad's coastline is one of the reasons people move here and one of the reasons visitors keep coming back. Four miles of sand, bluffs, tide pools, campgrounds, and surf breaks, all inside city limits. Pick your stretch and go.
