About

Carlsbad State Beach, a 44-acre California state park established in 1933, stretches along Carlsbad Boulevard from Pine Avenue south to Cannon Road at the base of the city's coastal bluffs. The beach is a year-round destination for surfing, bodyboarding, scuba diving, and fishing, with the warm-water jetties near Tamarack Avenue drawing board riders who source equipment from Carlsbad surf retailers including Degree 33 Surfboards. A paved seawall walkway, constructed in 1976, runs approximately 0.8 miles between Pine Avenue and Tamarack Avenue, separating the beach from the historic Coast Highway 101 corridor and serving as a jogging, cycling, and dog-walking path above the sand. Bluff erosion along this section of Carlsbad Boulevard has prompted stabilization efforts including native coastal sage scrub plantings — coast cholla and other drought-tolerant species — designed to discourage foot traffic and anchor the sandstone cliffs. The northern end of the beach transitions into the Carlsbad Village district, where beachfront lodging at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort and Spa sits above the bluffs on Carlsbad Boulevard. South of the main beach, 220 bluff-top campsites at South Carlsbad State Beach offer electrical hookups, showers, Wi-Fi, and a camp store — a reservation-only campground that fills months in advance for the May-through-September peak season.
