The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park sits on 3.7 acres of the Embarcadero waterfront, and on a summer night with the San Diego Bay behind the stage and the skyline lit up overhead, there isn't a better place to see live music in Southern California. The 2026 summer season lineup proves the San Diego Symphony knows it. This isn't a filler schedule. It's a statement.
The headliners: The Beach Boys are bringing "The Sounds of Summer" tour with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Buddy Guy celebrates his 90th birthday in a concert that honors one of the most important guitarists in American music history, nine Grammys, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, a Kennedy Center Honor. Brandi Carlile brings The Human Tour in September. Weird Al Yankovic stops through on his Bigger & Weirder tour. Interpol, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Mt. Joy round out the rock and indie side.
Symphonic Nights and Special Events
The Rady Shell's magic is the way it blends pop headliners with orchestral programming. The 2026 season includes a full-score live performance of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the San Diego Symphony plays John Williams' score while the movie screens on the bay. There's a Woodstock and Harlem Cultural Festival tribute concert celebrating the music of 1969. A George and Ira Gershwin evening that pulls from their Hollywood film scores. And the July Fourth concert marks America's 250th anniversary with a grand celebration.
The Saturday night four-pack, Wynonna Judd, Melissa Etheridge, The Beach Boys, and a Beatles White Album tribute by Classic Albums Live, is the anchor subscription package. But individual tickets move fast for the bigger names. Brandi Carlile and Buddy Guy will both sell out. Plan ahead.
Making a Night of It
The Rady Shell sits on the Embarcadero between the USS Midway Museum and Seaport Village. It's walking distance from Little Italy, the Gaslamp, and most downtown hotels. The venue has its own food and drink program, you can buy at the concession stands or bring a blanket and picnic in the lawn seating. A lot of regulars do both.
For dinner before a show, The Fish Market is right on the waterfront. Carnitas' Snack Shack on the Embarcadero is a more casual option with one of the best porchetta sandwiches in San Diego. Extraordinary Desserts handles the post-show sweet tooth. And if you're coming from the Gaslamp side, grab a drink at The Lion's Share before walking down to the Shell.
Parking along Harbor Drive fills up on concert nights. The Trolley stops nearby, and rideshare drop-offs work well at the Convention Center loop. But honestly, the best approach is to make the walk part of the experience. A sunset stroll down the Embarcadero past the Maritime Museum, the tall ships in the harbor catching the last light, then settling into the Rady Shell as the sky goes dark. That's a downtown San Diego evening done right.
