About

Spanning three acres at the corner of Talbot Street and Canon Street in Point Loma, Westminster Park combines a grass amphitheater, a 7,500-square-foot community garden, and a public playground on grounds owned by Westminster Presbyterian Church. The park operates as an outdoor extension of Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the sanctuary and amphitheater both available for wedding ceremonies, memorial services, and family-birthday picnics through the church's facility-use agreement. The Westminster Community Garden launched around 2012 on a 7,500-square-foot plot divided into individual vegetable and flower beds, with plot fees covering shared tools, managed water allocation, and the organic-cultivation requirements gardeners agree to before applying. Plot allocation runs through an application process handled via the church website, with members cultivating kale, snap peas, cabbage, strawberries, peonies, and other coastal-climate crops under rules requiring consultation with the garden manager before any fertilizer, pesticide, or herbicide use. The garden sits a 15-minute walk from the main entrance of Point Loma Nazarene University, which developed the plot with the church as a public-private partnership that donates 20 percent of annual produce to community members in need. Reserved event capacity extends from small birthday picnics through full-day wedding rehearsals and ceremonies, with jumpy-house vendors and outside caterers accepted on presentation of a current Certificate of Liability naming Westminster Park and the church as certificate holders.
