About

Shelter Island Pier in Point Loma, originally built in 1956 and rebuilt to its current T-shaped configuration in 1990, extends 200 feet from shore into San Diego Bay before widening into a 500-foot fishing platform managed by the San Diego Unified Port District. No fishing license is required on the pier, and the bay-side position produces year-round catches of spotfin croaker, yellowfin croaker, sand bass, halibut, mackerel, and seasonal bonito — the same species that deep-water charters out of Fisherman’s Landing target on longer offshore runs. Fish-cleaning stations, pier lighting for night sessions, and the on-site Fathom Bistro Bait & Tackle supply terminal rigging and live bait without leaving the structure. The Shelter Island Shoreline Park surrounding the pier adds a boat launch ramp, fire rings, and bayfront walking paths, connecting anglers to the kayak and paddleboard access points at Action Sport Rentals along the same waterfront. The most productive sessions target halibut during spring grunion runs on incoming tide, when baitfish concentrate along the pier’s T-junction pilings and draw flatfish up from the sandy bottom.
