About

Tommy-Award-winning choreographer Terry Wilson leads San Diego Dance Theater in Point Loma, continuing the 501(c)(3) modern dance company founded by SDSU Professor Emeritus George Willis in 1972. Studio and office operations run from Suite 108 at Dance Place San Diego inside Liberty Station, sharing the former Naval Training Center performing arts corridor with Cygnet Theatre and other resident companies. Signature programming centers on Trolley Dances™, an annual site-specific performance staged along the San Diego MTS trolley line that uses train platforms, station plazas, and public spaces as impromptu stages. Cross-border projects with Tijuana choreographers, including recurring collaborations with Lux Boreal Dance Company, extend the repertoire into binational contemporary work while the school division layers onto Liberty Station's dance ecosystem alongside modern studios including DanzArts. Jean Isaacs choreographed over 50 dances during her 1997-2021 tenure before Wilson assumed artistic direction in February 2021, with annual Trolley Dances production — coordinating multiple choreographers, sites, and MTS operational approvals across a public-arts weekend — representing the organization's most complex undertaking.
