About

Established in 2005 as a nonprofit by founder Patricia Astorga-Casey, DanzArts operates its Point Loma San Diego studio from the Dorothea Laub Dance Place in Liberty Station. The Truxtun Road studio specializes in Ballet Folklorico and Flamenco instruction, a cultural-preservation mission that runs parallel to the contemporary dance work of Malashock Dance inside the same Dance Place building. DanzArts runs two in-house performance companies — Sabor Mexico and Esencia Flamenca — that feed advanced students from the children's program (ages 6+) and adult tracks into performance placements. Classes are taught in Studio 103 on the downstairs level, covering regional Mexican dance technique, flamenco basics, arm and hand technique, and choreography structure, with instructors drawn from across the cultural dance community. The same Dance Place building also houses San Diego Dance Theater, whose contemporary and modern repertoire sits alongside DanzArts's cultural-dance programming under the 13,000 square-foot shared facility's umbrella. DanzArts preserves cultural awareness of Mexico and Spain through the two companies' touring schedule, community events, and the full-length flamenco and folklorico productions the studio stages out of Liberty Station each year.
