About

Six-Emmy-winning Malashock Dance operates from Dance Place San Diego in Point Loma under founding artistic director John Malashock, a former Twyla Tharp company dancer who launched the organization in 1988. Shared studio walls at 2650 Truxtun Road connect the company to San Diego Ballet, with both nonprofits anchoring the Dorothea Laub Dance Place concentration of professional dance inside Liberty Station. The repertoire spans more than 100 original commissioned works, and the six Emmy Awards trace to dance films that aired on over 30 PBS affiliate stations nationwide. Christopher Kaui Morgan assumed artistic direction in January 2024, continuing the school division added in 2007 that trains dancers from age three through pre-professional levels alongside youth programs at Liberty Station including Dance To EvOLvE-Liberty Station. Evening-length professional productions staged in partnership with organizations including La Jolla Playhouse, the Old Globe, and San Diego Opera represent the company's most complex undertakings, drawing commissioned scores and guest choreographers for multi-week runs.
