Board-certified family physician Dr. David E. LaRue brings more than 30 years of medical experience to the urgent care team at San Diego Sports Medicine & Family Health Center, located at 1945 Garnet Ave in Pacific Beach, 92109. After earning his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where he was honored as a Student-Athlete All American in NCAA Division II basketball, Dr. LaRue received his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in 1990. He completed his residency at Kaiser Fontana, becoming the first DO accepted into their Family Medicine program, and went on to practice with San Diego Kaiser Medical Group for 30 years before joining SDSM in 2019. The clinic treats walk-in injuries, illnesses, and routine primary care concerns seven days a week, and the Beach Area Family Health Center nearby offers an additional resource for families needing ongoing primary care relationships. Dr. LaRue's provider team includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants who collectively cover extended hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. He is also affiliated with UC San Diego Health and holds active licenses in both California and Florida. Outside the exam room, Dr. LaRue plays guitar, backpacks, and cycles through San Diego's coastal trails.
