Part of a nonprofit network rooted in community activism since 1970, Beach Area Family Health Center is a federally qualified health center at 3705 Mission Blvd in 92109, just one block from the Pacific Ocean in the heart of Mission Beach. The clinic operates under Family Health Centers of San Diego, an organization founded when Laura Rodriguez and a group of Barrio Logan residents occupied a building to demand medical services for their neighborhood. That grassroots effort grew into one of the ten largest FQHCs in the country, now serving more than 227,000 patients annually across over 90 sites in San Diego County. The organization holds Joint Commission accreditation and NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home designation. Across the street stands the Beach Area Women’s Health Center, providing reproductive health care and prenatal support as a companion facility. At this beach-side location, eleven physicians cover family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, and nurse practitioner services. Additional on-site offerings include chiropractic care, chronic disease management for diabetes and hypertension, mental health counseling, pediatric services, STI screening, and COVID-19 vaccinations. The center operates on a sliding fee scale based on income and family size, and no patient is turned away for inability to pay. It accepts Medi-Cal, Covered California, Medicare, and a wide range of commercial plans. Patients who need urgent care outside the center’s weekday hours can visit Marque Urgent Care on Fanuel Street, which is open seven days a week including evenings. Staff members speak English, Spanish, and Russian, reflecting the diversity of the surrounding community.
