One block from the Pacific Ocean at 3690 Mission Blvd, San Diego 92109, Beach Area Women's Health Center provides reproductive and women's health services as part of Family Health Centers of San Diego, one of the ten largest Federally Qualified Health Centers in the country. FHCSD was founded in 1970 when community leader Laura Rodriguez and a group of Barrio Logan activists occupied a building to demand neighborhood medical services, eventually establishing the Chicano Free Clinic. Today the organization operates more than 90 sites across San Diego County and cares for over 227,000 patients annually, 91 percent of whom are low-income and 29 percent uninsured. The Beach Area clinic sits directly across the street from the Beach Area Family Health Center primary care location and offers pregnancy testing, prenatal care, cervical cancer screening, family planning, annual OB/GYN exams, STI prevention and treatment, breast exams, mammogram referrals, and colorectal screenings. Locals heading south on Mission Blvd after an appointment sometimes stop at Coaster Saloon for a casual bite. The center participates in the Every Woman Counts program and accepts Medi-Cal, Medicare, Covered California, private insurance, and a sliding fee scale for patients without coverage. FHCSD holds Patient-Centered Medical Home accreditation from both The Joint Commission and the National Committee for Quality Assurance. As a Title X-funded provider, the organization delivers comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services to more than 42,000 unique patients each year. Visitors exploring the Mission Beach boardwalk area can find ocean-view dining at Flamingo Deck just up Mission Boulevard. Appointments are available Monday through Thursday until 5 p.m. and Friday mornings until noon.
