About

A man-made island at the geographic center of Mission Bay, Vacation Isle Park stretches along Hibiscus Ln in the 92109 zip code and is divided into East and West halves by a remarkable centerpiece: the Mission Bay Model Yacht Pond. The pond, roughly the size of a football field at 200 feet wide by 800 feet long, has been part of the Mission Bay master plan since 1939 and was originally built for a program where San Diego city schools competed in model boat building. Today the San Diego Argonauts, a radio-controlled sailing club, race electric, steam-powered, and wind-driven model boats here nearly every Saturday, with scale boat divisions in the morning and sailboat regattas in the afternoon. The pond is connected to Mission Bay by an underground pipe, so its water level rises and falls with the ocean's tides. The waterfront bar and restaurant Tidal offers sunset cocktails minutes away on Mission Boulevard for visitors arriving early. Vacation Isle East features a reservable picnic gazebo and shade trees, while the West side offers open grassy expanses and fire rings along the sandy shore. A rocky barrier between the sand and water makes swimming difficult, but the views across the bay toward SeaWorld and the downtown skyline are among the best in the park system. No lifeguards are stationed here, and no more than one inflatable per site is allowed with a permit. Italian wine and handmade pasta at Enoteca Adriano on Turquoise Street make a refined end to a lazy afternoon at the pond. Paradise Point Resort & Spa borders the island to the north, and Ski Beach Park occupies the eastern shore.
