About

Under the artistic direction of Steven Wistrich since 1993, City Ballet of San Diego has grown from a Pacific Beach rehearsal hall into a professional company that performs full seasons at the historic Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego and the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, with its home studio at 941 Garnet Ave, 92109. Resident Choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich has created over 60 original ballets ranging from short contemporary pieces to full-length classical productions, and the company holds the distinction of being southern California's largest presenter of ballets choreographed by George Balanchine. Theatergoers heading to a downtown performance often start the evening with pastries and charcuterie at The French Gourmet before driving south to Spreckels. Season 33 featured premieres including The Firebird and a full-length Who Cares?, alongside the beloved annual production of The Nutcracker at the California Center for the Arts. The company offers active military discounts and is designated women-owned. Associate Artistic Director Ariana Gonzalez and Resident Choreographer Geoffrey Gonzalez round out the leadership team, while General Manager Jo Anne Emery has overseen operations since the company's founding. National publications including Dance Magazine, Pointe Magazine, and Dance Teacher Magazine have published feature articles on the company and its directors. Audience members celebrating a night out after a performance can continue the evening at Waterbar overlooking the Pacific Beach boardwalk. The San Diego Union-Tribune has delivered consistently strong critical reviews throughout the company's three-decade history.
