When Angelina Vazquez brought her family recipes from San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Pacific Beach in December 2021, she opened the neighborhood's first dedicated birrieria at 865 Turquoise St in 92109. Vazquez learned to cook regional dishes in her hometown before launching Taqueria La Huasteca in San Jacinto, California in July 2019, followed by a Riverside location in the La Sierra area. The Pacific Beach restaurant occupies the indoor-outdoor space that previously housed Treelogy Cafe in North PB. The menu centers on slow-cooked, fall-apart birria in two preparations: birria de Borrego made with lamb and birria de res made with beef. Mediterranean flavors from a different tradition can be found at Cafe Athena on the same Turquoise Street corridor, giving the block a diverse dining character. Beyond traditional birria tacos and burritos, the kitchen offers creative variations including pizza birria, ramen birria, mulitas, and gorditas. Breakfast options feature chilaquiles and menudo, while chicken mole and quesabirrias round out the lunch and dinner lineup. Handmade tortillas are prepared on-site daily. The restaurant identifies as Latino-owned and maintains a 4.7-star Google rating across more than 320 reviews, with guests consistently praising the lamb birria and the pozole's rich, home-style broth. Visitors exploring the North PB dining scene can also check out Waterbar on Felspar Street for oceanview cocktails and seafood. Rooftop seating provides an outdoor dining option unique among North Pacific Beach eateries, and the shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
