About

Opened in 1958 as a modest 82-room inn on the former Scripps family summer estate, Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa at 3999 Mission Blvd in the 92109 zip code has grown into one of Pacific Beach's most recognizable landmarks. The resort is owned and operated by the Evans family of San Diego — founded by William and Anne Evans — with Anne Evans currently serving as Chairman Emeritus, Grace Evans Cherashore as Executive Chairwoman, and David Cherashore and Bill Evans as Executive Board Members. A 14-story tower addition in 1969 brought 150 rooms and sweeping views of Mission Bay, and further expansion in 1986 pushed the property to its current 310-room footprint spanning Polynesian-themed buildings adorned with more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants, koi ponds, waterfalls, and tiki torches. The lobby features a front desk constructed from Tahitian Black Koa wood, hand-crafted Mexican Cantera floor tiles, and Honduran mahogany finishes, with island Mulberry Tapa barkcloth and Balinese totem poles completing the South Pacific atmosphere. On-site dining anchors around Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort's signature California-cuisine restaurant overlooking Sail Bay, along with Lava Java grab-and-go and a seasonal poolside bar and grill. The Catamaran Spa, which opened in 2005, is San Diego's only beachfront spa, offering ten treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, steam room, sauna, and a whirlpool overlooking Mission Bay. Guests can rent sailboats, kayaks, paddleboards, and surfboards through the resort's water sports center on Mission Bay, and seasonal cruises aboard the Bahia Belle — a 74-foot replica 1860s sternwheeler — depart nightly to loop the bay between the Catamaran and its sister property, Bahia Resort Hotel. The resort's WE CARE corporate social responsibility program focuses on environmental stewardship and community philanthropy throughout the Pacific Beach neighborhood. Summer signature luaus produced by Pride of Polynesia have been a local tradition since 2001, and The Knot has named the property a Best of Weddings winner for its indoor and outdoor ceremony venues. A short stroll south on the boardwalk leads to World Famous, a beachside breakfast and brunch destination favored by resort guests exploring the neighborhood on rented cruiser bikes. With Mission Bay as its backyard and the Pacific Ocean directly across the street, the Catamaran remains one of the few San Diego resorts that can offer both bay and ocean access from a single property.
