Scratch-made California-style bagels and specialty coffee from Dark Horse Coffee Roasters anchor the menu at Spill The Beans Coffee and Bagels, which opened its Pacific Beach location at 980 Garnet Ave (92109) in early 2025 inside the historic Dunaway Building. This is the fourth San Diego outpost for the brand, joining existing locations in the Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, and Mission Valley. Spill The Beans is part of the Verant Group portfolio, the bar and restaurant collective co-founded by Eric Lingenfelder, Mark Cirillo, and Joe Vaught in 2003, which also operates Barleymash, Sandbar, The Smoking Gun, Mavericks Beach Club, and Hasta Mañana Cantina around San Diego. The bagels here deliberately break from the traditional New York playbook: signature flavors include tomato & cheese, bacon & white cheddar, and a rotating seasonal option, all baked in-house and served toasted. House-made cream cheeses like white truffle & parmesan, bananas foster, and caramelized shallot & chive push the concept further from convention. The most popular sandwich, dubbed The San Dieggo, stacks thick-cut peppered bacon, two over-medium fried eggs, American and pepper jack cheese, and cayenne aioli on any bagel or baked bun. An Asian-fusion lox bagel with wasabi-ginger cream cheese and fried capers represents the more adventurous end of the menu. Coffee options run the classics — Americano, cortado, cappuccino, flat white — alongside seasonal specialty lattes and a signature cold brew brewed from single-origin Mexican beans with nutty, chocolate, and orange peel notes, also available in cans for home brewing. The PB shop features outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, and the morning rush draws a mix of surfers, remote workers, and yoga regulars from studios along Garnet Avenue. Those heading out for a bigger meal later can walk to Pacific Beach AleHouse just a few blocks west, and Verant Group's own Tavern at the Beach is another property from the same hospitality team closer to the boardwalk.
