Gathering each week inside the Hyatt at 1441 Quivira Rd in the Mission Bay area of Pacific Beach, 92109, C3 Church Mission Bay is a campus of the multi-site congregation now widely known as Awaken Church. Pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius founded the church in August 2005 after relocating from Sydney, Australia, where Jurgen had spent seven years leading youth ministry at C3 Church Oxford Falls under Pastors Phil and Chris Pringle. The first San Diego service drew about 50 attendees, and the church has since expanded to multiple campuses across the county and beyond. Boaters and paddlers heading out after the service can launch from nearby Mission Bay Golf Course and Practice Center, which borders the same waterfront stretch. Before arriving in Australia, Jurgen and Leanne spent seven years in Auckland, New Zealand, where they built one of the nation’s largest youth ministries at South City CLC and launched programs that reached high schools and colleges citywide. Services at the Mission Bay campus feature contemporary worship music and messages that rotate among several teaching pastors. The Hyatt location on Quivira Rd sits at the edge of Mission Bay, and churchgoers arriving early sometimes walk the shoreline before the service begins. The church offers programming for children and youth alongside its main gatherings, and attendees heading to a late brunch often walk over to Dockside 1953 on the nearby Mission Bay waterfront. Community groups meet throughout the week at various locations across Pacific Beach.
