About

Sculptural artist Melissa Medina operates her studio and gallery at 4502 Cass St in Pacific Beach's 92109, a second-floor space inside a 150-year-old former pharmacy building on the corner of Cass and Emerald streets. Medina is known for bold, three-dimensional mixed-media works, and her pieces have drawn attention from collectors and influencers across Southern California. She is also a co-founder of Meraki Spaces, a membership-based creative collective that opened in December 2024 on the same floor of the building, alongside vintage designer Darbe Canady and ceramicist Kahla Lauinger. A walk down Cass Street leads to The Fishery, a neighborhood staple for fresh-catch seafood and a natural lunch stop between gallery visits. The Meraki workspace spans over 1,000 square feet across four rooms, including a photography studio that has already hosted an independent film shoot, and currently counts 35 members. Meraki takes zero commission on member art sales, a rarity in the gallery world, and hosts monthly networking events and artist markets open to the public. Medina also runs the Meraki Art Institute, a mentorship program for emerging creatives looking to develop their practice. The building's charm, including original crown moulding and historical trim, drew Medina and her collaborators after a long search for creative space in a neighborhood that had few options for working artists. Wine and small plates at Enoteca Adriano cap off an evening of art browsing in north Pacific Beach. The studio is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the community-driven calendar of events gives visitors a reason to return throughout the month.
