About

As the Ocean Beach chapter of the San Diego River Park Foundation — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporated in 2001 to steward the 52-mile San Diego River from Julian to the Pacific — Friends of the River Mouth runs monthly Tuesday-morning habitat-restoration sessions at the river's terminus near Dog Beach. Volunteer crews stage from the grassy lawn between the Ocean Villa Inn and the bike path next to the river, then move to the Dusty Rhodes Park perimeter and the river-jetty interface where invasive ice plant and Carpobrotus removal opens space for native dune vegetation to re-establish. The work targets one of the last surviving Coastal Dune and Coastal Wetland habitats in California — over 95% of these ecosystems statewide have been lost — and supports nesting habitat for state and federally listed bird species including the California least tern and western snowy plover. Tools, gloves, and water are provided onsite, and verified community-service hours are issued to high school and court-ordered participants on completion. Invasive removal at the boundary of the Ocean Beach Athletic Area Robb Field complex is a recurring focus because the manicured ballfield turf abuts the riparian zone and creates a high-pressure invasive-species edge. The most demanding annual project is the post-winter-storm trash sweep, when sediment loads from the upper watershed deposit thousands of pounds of debris into the river mouth that must be cleared before the spring nesting season opens.
