About

Operated by the Second Bassoonist of the San Diego Symphony and Principal Bassoon of Orchestra Nova San Diego—a performer who previously held the Associate Principal chair with the Los Angeles Philharmonic—RS Woodwinds runs a Straubinger-certified repair bench at 4135 Voltaire St in Ocean Beach. The shop services instruments played by orchestral and chamber musicians across Southern California, including performers in ensembles like All Souls’ Episcopal Church/Bach Collegium San Diego’s period-instrument and choral programs. The bench handles Brannen, Powell, and Haynes flutes; Heckel and Puchner bassoons; Loree and Marigaux oboes and english horns; Buffet, Selmer, and Yamaha clarinets; and Yanagisawa and vintage Beuscher saxophones from sopranino through bass. Every instrument is play-tested throughout the repair process—from pad replacement and cork fitting through final regulation—applying the same performance standard the owner uses on the symphony stage. Beyond full overhauls, the shop provides clean-oil-adjust maintenance packages for student-grade instruments, keeping school-band and community-ensemble horns in rotation alongside the lesson programs at The Heart of Rock n Roll - School of Music nearby. The most complex commissions involve full mechanical rebuilds—stripping an instrument to bare body, fabricating custom keywork, re-padding with Straubinger pads, and reassembling to factory-or-better tolerances on concert-tier horns.
