About

The T. Claude and Gladys B. Ryan Family YMCA — renamed from the Peninsula Family YMCA to honor the Ryan family of Ryan Aeronautics (whose team built the Spirit of Saint Louis) — has served the Point Loma and OB community from 4390 Valeta Street since 1970 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit across a 3.1-acre campus. Youth-sports and outdoor-pool programming make the Y a natural feeder into ocean-based children's programs such as Ocean Beach Surfing School once kids progress past basic swim-safety credentials. Facilities include a wellness center with cardio and strength equipment, a basketball court, an outdoor pool supporting swim lessons and lap swim and water aerobics and family swim and adaptive programs, plus child care, preschool, and summer camp programming across all school-age tracks. The campus honors active-military discounts, operates on scholarship-supported sliding-scale membership, and is one of 17 Ys across San Diego County sharing cross-facility member access. Adult wellness programming includes martial arts, hiking, running groups, and yoga classes that overlap with independent neighborhood studios such as Yoga Box for members who want supplementary drop-in options. A major renovation is in early planning under Executive Director Jonathon Collopy, with expanded programming, modernized accessible spaces, and multigenerational family-membership infrastructure designed to carry the 55-year-old facility into its next operating era.
