Born on a single electric griddle in a Lincoln College dorm room in 2003 and rebuilt through San Diego farmers markets before its 2019 Newport Avenue storefront, Mad Munch Grilled Cheezer runs one of OB's most specialized sandwich programs. The menu exceeds 20 grilled-cheese variants—hash-brown-and-bacon builds, goat-cheese-and-raspberry-jam melts, chicken-cheddar —After School Specials——staking out a single-item depth uncommon on the Newport Ave comfort-food strip that includes Hodad's Ocean Beach. Every dipping sauce, from the house ranch to a proprietary cheese blend, is produced in the 800-square-foot kitchen at 4871-B Newport Avenue. A hand-painted 102-square-foot mural inside the shop was completed freehand—no stencils, no projectors—underscoring the same owner-built ethos behind the food, a scratch-kitchen intensity shared by Pop Pie Co. on the same corridor. Full off-site catering packages scale the rotating Cheezer lineup to private events and community gatherings exceeding 500 guests.
