Community-owned since 1971 and a member of the National Co+op Grocers association, Ocean Beach People's Food Co-op runs a 13,000-square-foot certified-organic vegetarian grocery and vegan deli at 4765 Voltaire Street, the former Ye Billiard Den site it has occupied since 1973. The 12,000-plus member-owner structure accepts SNAP and EBT and runs a Food Access Program named FLOWER, which gives qualifying households a $5 annual ownership plus 5% off every transaction, expanding organic grocery access beyond the income bracket that stops at the Wednesday evening Ocean Beach Farmers Market. The produce department carries 100% certified-organic items, paired with a bulk-foods and herbs section, wellness and body care aisles, and an upstairs deli-and-bakery mezzanine serving fresh soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothies, juices, entrées, and baked goods. The 2001-2002 green building was designed by Hanna Gabriel Wells and cited by the San Diego Union-Tribune for energy efficiency, part of an ecological operating practice that aligns the store with restoration advocacy at Friends of the River Mouth at the adjacent San Diego River mouth. The co-op is also the largest single-location employer in Ocean Beach, staffing 73 positions across grocery, deli, and community-education functions. The fullest project the store runs is the annual cooperative-owner meeting and patronage-rebate cycle, where the member-owned structure redistributes net surplus back to the owner base under the California Consumer Cooperative Corporation Law rather than to outside shareholders.
