Launched in 2018 as a sister concept to Pop Pie Co. in San Diego's University Heights, Stella Jean's Ice Cream opened its Point Loma branch in early 2022 inside the 2,128-square-foot former Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf next door to Cesarina at the Voltaire St corner. The small-batch program leans on globally-inspired flavors—Ube + Pandesal Toffee, Mango Sticky Rice, Vietnamese Coffee, Honey Lavender + Shortbread, Salty Caramel Corn, Madagascar Vanilla, Milk + Cookies—pairing the international pastry direction also seen at Bakehouse by CoCo Playa. Stella Jean's collaborates with local makers and chefs on specialty flavor drops popular enough to sell on presale, and the ice cream sandwich pairs scoops between homemade cookies. The Voltaire St shop shares its building with Pop Pie Co.'s savory and sweet hand-pies, giving the location a dual sweet-and-savory format unlike the standalone cafe at OB Surf Cafe. The Point Loma store is one of seven locations operating across San Diego County and Orange County under the Sweet & Savory Collective hospitality group. Custom presale ice cream drops developed in collaboration with named local chefs and small-format catering tied to events are the most complex builds the small-batch kitchen produces.
