Cheers is an LGBTQ+ neighborhood bar at 1839 Adams Avenue in University Heights, San Diego, occupying a building that started as a general grocery store in 1908 before converting to a beer and wine bar and taking its current name in 1982. Owner Jim acquired the bar in January 1996 and has maintained it as a community gathering point for the 92116 ZIP and surrounding neighborhoods ever since. The bar sits at the intersection of Adams Avenue and Park Blvd, placing it on the corridor that runs south into Balboa Park. The outside-food-welcome policy means that takeout from Park Blvd neighbors, including Bahn Thai's curry and noodle plates, shows up at the pool table on a regular basis. A Touch Tunes digital jukebox, fifty-cent pool games, darts, and a back patio round out the physical setup. Weekly programming includes karaoke nights and a Thursday trivia rotation that draws regulars from University Heights, Normal Heights, Hillcrest, and North Park. The Sunday cookout fires up a grill for complimentary burgers and hot dogs from Chef Rodney, alongside drink specials. El Cajon Blvd runs one block south, and the Lafayette Hotel — the El Cajon Blvd corridor's dominant landmark — sits less than a mile east on Mississippi Street. Old Trolley Barn Park is a short walk northeast at Adams and Florida Street, giving the block a residential-park buffer. The Hillcrest LGBTQ+ bar scene, including longstanding craft-cocktail rooms at Aero Club Bar on India Street, sits just over the hill to the southwest via Park Blvd. Cheers maintains a full spirits rail with well drinks, domestic and craft draft pours, and a cocktail menu.
