Bahn Thai has served San Diego's University Heights from a counter-service storefront at 4646 Park Blvd since Paul and Jinda Srimuang opened the restaurant in September 2011. "Bahn" translates to "home" in Thai, and the Srimuangs built the menu around traditional dishes — pad Thai, drunken noodles, roasted duck curry, bai grapow, and a panang curry finished with coconut milk, bell peppers, and Thai basil. The kitchen uses no MSG across its entire menu, and every curry paste is mixed in-house rather than sourced from commercial suppliers. The plant-forward side of the menu overlaps with the vegan Thai dishes at Plumeria Vegetarian Restaurant further up Adams Avenue, though Bahn Thai runs a full protein roster including shrimp, chicken, beef, and the roasted duck that anchors the curry section. A second Bahn Thai location operates in Hillcrest on Fifth Avenue, but the University Heights flagship on Park Blvd remains the higher-volume kitchen. The Srimuangs purchased the 1,581-square-foot, 1929-era building at 4628 Park Blvd — formerly home to Small Bar and the short-lived Johnston's — to expand the restaurant's footprint along the same block. The Park Blvd address puts Bahn Thai three blocks north of Diversionary Theatre and a straight shot south from Balboa Park, making it a regular stop for families driving back from the San Diego Zoo in the 92116 ZIP. Catering trays serve 10 to 20 and ship with individual sauce packets for pad Thai and satay, a format popular with offices along El Cajon Blvd. Stehly Farms Market on Adams Avenue supplies some of the same local produce that shows up in the vegetable stir-fry specials, connecting the restaurant's sourcing to the neighborhood's farm-direct pipeline. The restaurants University Heights clusters along this corridor include multiple Thai kitchens, but Bahn Thai's 2011 opening makes it the longest-tenured on the block. Mango sticky rice closes the dessert menu — glutinous rice steamed with coconut cream and draped over fresh-cut Thai mango, a preparation the Srimuangs have not altered since opening night.
