San Diego Youth Services has operated an East County office at 7373 University Avenue in La Mesa since expanding its countywide network to serve at-risk and homeless youth closer to where they live. Founded in 1970 as one of the nation's first shelters for homeless youth, the organization now serves over 23,000 young people annually through 100-plus community and school-based locations, with local programming that connects to youth-serving institutions including Boys and Girls Clubs of East County - La Mesa Clubhouse. The La Mesa-Spring Valley School District partnership, active for over a decade, deploys the HERE Now suicide-and-bullying prevention curriculum in seventh and eighth grades, a Community Assessment Team for behavioral-health referrals, and the Incredible Years evidence-based classroom program at elementary campuses including Bancroft and Rancho Elementary. Foster-care youth transitioning to adulthood receive independent-living skills training through a case-management track that coordinates with behavioral-health providers like Evolve Teen Treatment Center in the Mt Helix area. The organization employs approximately 250 staff and 80 volunteers across the county, manages a $24 million annual budget, and reports more than 780,000 cumulative youth served since its 1970 founding.
