Harper's Topiary Garden

About

Sculpted shrub art fills the front yard of a private Mission Hills residence on Union Street, where Harper's Topiary Garden has grown into a self-guided sidewalk attraction of more than fifty hand-pruned topiaries shaped into animals, abstract forms, and geometric figures. The plant material itself comes from the same kind of specimen stock that Mission Hills Nursery supplies to local gardeners, though the shaping technique here relies on years-long training cuts rather than retail pruning. Visitors view the installation from the public sidewalk during daylight with no admission, since the entire display sits on residential frontage. Photography is welcome and the corner location means the garden can be circled on foot in about ten minutes. The garden is one of two free-to-visit outdoor stops along the Union Street pedestrian loop in Mission Hills, anchoring a residential streetscape that also includes the historic Calvary Cemetery overlook at Pioneer Park. The garden's standout pieces are the multi-trunk dinosaur figures and freeform spiral cones, sculptures that take a full decade of incremental shaping to reach their finished silhouettes.
