Mission Hills Nursery

About

Founded in 1910 and operating continuously at 1525 Fort Stockton Drive, Mission Hills Nursery is San Diego's oldest nursery, originally established by Kate Sessions — the horticulturist widely known as the Mother of Balboa Park. The 115-year-old garden center stocks trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, California natives, succulents, rare and exotic specimens, and a rotating tropical and plumeria selection, with plant-health advice at the counter and design referrals routed to maintenance contractors such as Eco Gardeners. Under continuous family ownership since 1989, the business has expanded from a neighborhood retail nursery into a full-service operation covering landscape maintenance, design, and installation, with bilingual English- and Spanish-language assistance across the sales floor. A 30-day plant guarantee covers specimens in 5-gallon sizes and larger, and year-round workshops run on succulent care, soil amendment, edible gardening, and seasonal pruning. The in-house design-and-install work coordinates plant sourcing, irrigation planning, and on-site installation with firms such as GroundLevel Landscape Architecture on Mission Hills canyon-lot projects. Full residential landscape overhauls — including historic-home gardens on Fort Stockton Line and Mission Hills Historic District properties — are scoped from soil preparation and native-plant selection through irrigation retrofit and finished installation.
