Out of the Closet - San Diego

About

San Diego's first Out of the Closet location — the LGBTQ+-owned thrift chain of AIDS Healthcare Foundation — opened at 3580 Fifth Ave in Hillcrest in October 2021, selling donated second-hand clothing, vintage pieces, books, and housewares with 96 cents of every dollar directed to AHF's HIV care and prevention programs operating in 45 countries. The same building houses an AHF Wellness Center providing free HIV and STD finger-prick testing with same-day results — a co-located health service that connects the retail thrift floor to the peer HIV support and community programming at Being Alive, Hillcrest's long-running HIV/AIDS community organization. Donated clothing, books, and housewares feed a rotating floor through the back-alley drop-off, giving the inventory constant turnover and making the donation process as accessible as the shopping floor one block south of The Loft on Fifth Avenue. The HIV-services mission that backs every purchase distinguishes this location from the donation-funded homeless services model at Father Joe's Villages Thrift Store & Donation Center on the corridor, where both shops run secondhand retail but direct proceeds toward different nonprofit beneficiaries. The most integrated service offering at the address is the thrift-to-clinic pipeline itself — a single visit to 3580 Fifth Ave can include secondhand shopping, a donated drop-off, and a same-day HIV test through the on-site AHF Wellness Center, a combination unavailable at any other thrift destination in the 92103.
