A University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine graduate and Fellow of the American Neuropsychiatric Association with subspecialty fellowship training in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry at Northwestern University, Dr. Joseph J. Cooper focuses his psychiatry practice on disorders at the interface of psychiatry and neurology. Catatonia evaluation, electroconvulsive therapy consultation for neuropsychiatric indications, and assessment of cognitive symptoms run parallel to the neuroHIV and neurocognitive work published by Ronald Joseph Ellis, MD, PhD on the same UC San Diego Hillcrest campus. Cooper also completed a fellowship in Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching and Scholarship at the University of Chicago and has directed medical student education and the psychiatry residency training program at his academic institution. Published work covers neuroimaging education in psychiatric training, sex differences in traumatic brain injury, and pediatric catatonia challenges in electroconvulsive therapy. Diagnostic MRI and PET imaging for workup of suspected autoimmune encephalitis, structural lesions in catatonia, and neurodegenerative disease presentations is ordered through UCSD Medical Center Rad at the 200 W Arbor Drive complex. The most complex cases involve diagnostic workup of catatonia in patients with autoimmune encephalitis requiring combined psychiatric and neurologic management.
