The diagnostic radiology service for the 390-bed UC San Diego Medical Center hospital tower at 200 West Arbor Drive, this department reads imaging for the only academic Level 1 Trauma Center in San Diego and Imperial Counties. CT, MRI, ultrasound, and interventional radiology are performed for both inpatient trauma cases and outpatient orthopedic referrals sent in by San Diego Orthopaedic Associates Medical Group, Inc. for pre-surgical workup. The reading room operates with a 360-slice CT scanner and a dedicated MRI located contiguous to the emergency department for rapid trauma turnaround. Occupational injury imaging studies sent over from Concentra for second-read consults route through the same musculoskeletal subspecialty queue. The signature workflow is the trauma activation imaging protocol — full-body CT angiography read in minutes for resuscitation-bay patients arriving with penetrating or blunt polytrauma.
