Established in 1982 as UC San Diego Health's dedicated HIV primary and specialty care center, the Owen Clinic operates from 4168 Front St 3rd Floor in Hillcrest on the Ambulatory Care Center floor of the UCSD Medical Offices South building in 92103. Federally designated a Ryan White Part C clinic in 1997, Owen Clinic serves as San Diego County's largest multidisciplinary HIV provider and runs parallel to community HIV services at AHF Wellness Center - San Diego, giving the 92103 LGBTQ+ community two different HIV care models within walking distance of each other. LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender-safe, the clinic integrates antiretroviral therapy, pre-exposure prophylaxis PrEP (with the PrEP-AP assistance program for uninsured or underinsured patients), post-exposure prophylaxis, STI screening, and chronic disease management for co-occurring diabetes, hypertension, and lipid disorders. Specialty sub-clinics cover anal cancer screening and treatment, hepatitis C cure protocols for HIV-HCV co-infection, and metabolic/lipid management for patients experiencing lipodystrophy or antiretroviral-induced glucose dysregulation — all housed inside the same UC San Diego Health Medical Offices South tower. Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center — San Diego & Imperial (Pacific AETC-SDI) is also housed at Owen Clinic, training healthcare providers across San Diego and Imperial counties in HIV 101, PrEP vs PEP protocols, newly-diagnosed clinical management, and antiretroviral therapy initiation through an HIV mini-residency observation program. The clinic cares for more than 3,000 people living with HIV each year through multidisciplinary teams of infectious disease physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, and HIV-specialty pharmacists, and also serves as a UC San Diego School of Medicine teaching site for medical students learning HIV care delivery.
