About

Board-certified addiction psychiatrist licensed in California (A068041) and Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Kai MacDonald has administered IV ketamine therapy to psychiatric patients since 2013 and co-wrote one of the early UCSD clinical protocols for its use. He served as a principal investigator in the UCSD Oxytocin Clinical Research Program and has co-authored work with UCSD psychiatrist Dr. David Folsom on physician boundary violations, attachment style, and childhood trauma — research adopted as gold-standard remediation curriculum by the medical board. His Second Avenue office offers a 90-minute initial intake, psychological testing, and intensive attachment-based and emotion-focused psychotherapy alongside ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. MacDonald is faculty at the AEDP Institute and integrates ISTDP and EMDR training with psychopharmacology in the same room; medication-only follow-ups can be coordinated with psychiatric nurse practitioner Bryan Amaro, DNP-PMHNP for clients who prefer separating prescribing from depth psychotherapy. Earlier in his career he served as assistant director of consult-liaison psychiatry at UCSD and as medical director of an outpatient substance abuse program. The most complex presentations he takes on are dual-diagnosis adults with treatment-resistant mood disorders, attachment trauma, and active addiction, treated with combined ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, AEDP, and structured pharmacotherapy.
