Dr. David Folsom

Mental Health

About

Director of the Division of Clinical Psychiatry at UC San Diego Health and board certified in both psychiatry and family medicine, David P. Folsom, MD trained as the first graduate of the UCSD Combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency in 2001 after his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1996. His Hillcrest clinical office at 350 Dickinson Street sits within the same UCSD academic complex that houses UCSD Psychology, supporting the integrated medicine and psychiatry training model he helped build. A NIMH Career Development Award funded his early research on health services for people experiencing homelessness with serious mental illness, the line of work that became Project 25 with Father Joe's Villages starting in 2011. His curriculum work on the Integrated Medicine and Psychiatry residency model has been published in Academic Psychiatry and shapes the joint family-medicine-and-psychiatry training pipeline he established. Co-management of FQHC primary care patients with serious mental illness has historically connected his Project 25 work to safety-net partner Hillcrest Family Health Center for community-based wraparound psychiatric follow-up. The most complex casework integrates simultaneous treatment of chronic medical conditions and serious mental illness for adults experiencing homelessness, coordinating internal medicine and psychiatric care in a single clinical encounter.
