About

Distinguished Professor and former Chair of the UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Igor Grant directs the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program and the University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research from the Hillcrest medical campus. Grant's clinical neuropsychiatric focus is the cognitive consequences of HIV, methamphetamine, and cannabis exposure across the lifespan, with shared patient pathways into the HIV primary-care population at the Owen Clinic. His translational neuroAIDS program spans the California NeuroAIDS Tissue Network, TMARC, and the CHARTER cohort. Since establishing the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center in 1989, his CNS HIV antiretroviral therapy effects research has produced shared protocols with UCSD HIV neurologist Ronald Joseph Ellis, MD, PhD, anchoring a citywide referral pathway for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder. Grant is the founding editor of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society and co-editor of AIDS and Behavior, with nearly 700 peer-reviewed publications. The most complex cases on his desk involve untangling HAND from the overlapping cognitive effects of long-term stimulant exposure, polypharmacy, and aging in patients on lifelong antiretroviral regimens.
